OCI cardholders no longer required to carry old passports for India travel.

The old OCI rules required overseas Indians to hold both their old and new passports, as well as their OCI card.

"The necessity of carrying old and new passports, as well as the OCI card, has been removed," the Indian embassy said on Monday, referring to a notification issued by the Centre in this regard, addressing one of the major concerns of Indians living abroad.

People of Indian descent and Indian diaspora with an overseas citizens of India card are no longer required to fly to India with their old, expired passports, as was previously required, according to a statement. The Indian government has also agreed to extend the deadline for getting OCI cards reissued for those under the age of 20 and those over the age of 50 until December 31, 2021. "An OCI cardholder who travels on the basis of a current OCI card with an old passport number will no longer be allowed to carry the old passport. It is, however, necessary to have a new (current) passport ". According to the embassy, the Indian government has agreed to extend the deadline for getting OCI cards reissued for those who have been deported until December 31, 2021.

According to the latest OCI guidelines, which have been in place since 2005, an OCI card must be re-issued each time the cardholder obtains a new passport before the age of 20 or after the age of 50. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian government has relaxed the second provision since last year. So far, the timetable has been changed many times. However, this is the first time that the rules for carrying old and new passports, as well as OCI cards for overseas Indians, have been relaxed. This has caused considerable inconvenience to the Indian diaspora, as old passports are typically discarded after new ones are released. However, the old OCI rules required overseas Indians to bear their old passports as well as their new passports and OCI cards.
