Lucy Maino, 25, who is also the co-captain of Papua New Guinea's women's football team, received a lot of backlash after posting a video of herself twerking on the video-sharing platform TikTok. Although twerking videos are popular online, particularly on the Tik-Tok app, some people criticised Maino's now-deleted video, claiming it was unfit for a "role model" to share a video of herself "dancing in this way." According to the Guardian, Maino was "released" from her duties by the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant committee this week after the video was made public and she faced criticism for it.
Maino, on the other hand, took to Instagram to explain that “some had suggested that the crown was taken” from her, which she denied.
